The Lock Types We Repair

Locks come in all shapes and sizes, and each type has its own set of common failure points. Euro cylinders are fitted to most modern uPVC and composite doors. They are reliable workhorses, but they wear down after years of daily use. The pins inside get rounded, the springs lose tension, and eventually the key will not turn smoothly. We either service the cylinder with new pins and springs, or fit a complete replacement.

Mortice deadlocks and sashlocks are standard on wooden doors. These are mechanical locks with levers inside a case that sits within the body of the door. When levers break, springs snap, or the bolt mechanism wears, the lock needs to be stripped down and rebuilt or replaced. We work with 2-lever, 3-lever and 5-lever mortice locks, including BS3621 insurance-rated models that your insurer may require on external doors.

Rim nightlatches, sometimes called Yale locks, are surface-mounted locks found on many older front doors. The spring mechanism that holds the latch in position can weaken, causing the door to fail to close properly. We repair or replace the complete unit and can upgrade you to a more secure deadlocking version if your current one is the basic auto-locking type.

We also repair window locks, patio door locks, letterbox locks, garage door locks, padlocks, and commercial locks including panic bars, mag locks and access control systems. Whatever type of lock you have, we have almost certainly worked on it before.

Common Lock Problems

These are the lock faults we see every week across Manchester. All of them are fixable.

Key sticks or is hard to turn
A stiff lock is usually caused by worn pins inside the cylinder or a build-up of dirt and debris. Graphite lubrication can provide a temporary fix, but if the pins are rounded or the springs have lost their tension, the cylinder needs replacing. We check whether a service will do the job or whether a new cylinder is the more sensible option. Either way, it is a quick fix.
Lock barrel spins without locking
When the key turns but the bolt does not throw, the cam or tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the mechanism has snapped. This is a common issue with euro cylinders on multi-point locks. The cylinder turns freely because it is no longer connected to anything. We replace the cylinder and check that the mechanism it connects to is also in good working order.
Deadbolt will not extend or retract
The deadbolt on a mortice lock or multi-point mechanism can stick in the extended or retracted position. This might be caused by a broken spring inside the lock body, a misaligned keep plate in the frame, or corrosion on the bolt itself. We strip the lock, identify the fault, and repair or replace the affected components. If the keep plate has moved, we re-position it for clean engagement.
Latch not holding the door closed
When the spring inside a nightlatch or sashlock weakens, the latch bolt does not hold firmly in the keep. The door drifts open or rattles in the wind. We replace the internal spring mechanism or, if the lock is old, fit a new unit that matches the existing cutout in the door. For nightlatches, we also check the cylinder and the backplate for wear.
Lock frozen or seized
Exposure to moisture and cold can cause lock internals to corrode and seize, particularly in locks on external doors that are sheltered from the sun. WD-40 is a temporary measure at best. We strip the lock, clean out the corrosion, replace any damaged parts, and lubricate the mechanism properly. For locks that are too far gone, we fit a stainless steel or weather-resistant replacement.
