Diagnose and fix any door problem

Door Doctor in Manchester

Not sure what is wrong with your door? That is exactly why we exist. Think of us as the GP for your doors. You tell us the symptom, it will not lock, it is sticking, it is draughty, the handle is loose, and we diagnose the cause and fix it on the spot. No need for you to know the technical name of the part or the type of mechanism. Just tell us what is happening and we will take it from there.

We have been diagnosing and repairing doors across Greater Manchester for over a decade. We have seen every fault, every bodged repair, every ageing mechanism, and every type of door from a 1930s wooden front door to a brand new composite. Whatever your door is doing, or not doing, we have almost certainly dealt with it before. We arrive, we diagnose, we fix. If we cannot fix it, you do not pay. It really is that simple.

What the Door Doctor Does

We are not a one-trick operation. The Door Doctor service covers every type of door and every type of fault. uPVC front doors that will not lock. Wooden back doors that swell and stick. Aluminium shop doors with broken closers. Patio doors that have jumped the track. Bifold doors where one panel is not folding properly. Composite doors with dropped hinges. Fire doors that do not close on their own. We handle every single one of them.

The key difference with our Door Doctor service is the diagnostic approach. Many tradespeople focus on replacing parts. We focus on understanding why the door is misbehaving in the first place. A door that will not lock might need a new mechanism, but it might also need the hinges adjusting so the locking points line up with the keeps. Replacing the mechanism without checking the alignment means the new one will fail prematurely too. We check everything before we start the repair.

We carry a comprehensive range of parts in our van covering mechanisms, cylinders, handles, hinges, friction stays, keeps, rollers, and gaskets. For roughly eight out of ten jobs, we complete the repair on the first visit. When a specialist part needs ordering, we identify it on site and return to fit it as soon as it arrives, usually within a couple of working days.

Our Door Doctor service is particularly useful for landlords and property managers who have multiple doors across a portfolio. We can visit a property, go through every door, flag what needs attention, and provide a single quote for all the work. This is more efficient than dealing with issues one at a time as they arise, and it means your tenants are not left with faulty doors while you try to work out what is wrong.

Problems We Diagnose Every Day

Tell us the symptom. We will find the cause. These are the issues we see most often.

Door will not lock properly
This could be a worn gearbox, a misaligned keep, a dropped hinge, a bent shootbolt, or a faulty cylinder. Often it is a combination. We systematically check each component in the locking chain to identify the root cause. Sometimes a five-minute hinge adjustment is all it takes. Sometimes the mechanism needs replacing. Either way, we find the actual problem rather than guessing, and we fix it properly the first time.
Door sticking, rubbing, or dragging
A door that catches on the frame or drags on the floor is usually either dropping on its hinges or swelling from moisture absorption. For uPVC and composite doors, we adjust or replace the flag hinges to lift the door back into position. For wooden doors, we check whether the problem is hinge-related or caused by timber movement, and address accordingly. We also check the frame for any structural shift that might be contributing.
Draughts coming through the door
Draughty doors are caused by worn seals, poor compression against the frame, or gaps created by a door that has dropped or warped. We check the gasket condition, the hinge adjustment, and the locking points. If the gaskets are perished, we replace them. If the door is not pulling tight enough against the seals, we adjust the keeps or replace the locking mechanism to improve compression. The result is a door that seals properly and keeps the cold out.
Handle loose, floppy, or broken
A loose handle is usually caused by worn fixing screws, a broken spring cassette inside the handle body, or a stripped spindle. We check all three and repair or replace as needed. For lever handles on wooden doors, the problem is often the return spring inside the mortice lock body rather than the handle itself. We investigate properly rather than just fitting a new handle on top of an underlying fault.
Door making strange noises
Squeaking hinges are the obvious one, but doors can also click, grind, or thud. Clicking usually means a locking cam is catching on a keep as the door closes. Grinding suggests the mechanism is wearing internally. A thud on closing often means the door is too tight in the frame and is compressing the seals unevenly. Each noise tells us something about what is going on, and we use it to diagnose the fault accurately.
