uPVC Door Repairs in Manchester
uPVC doors are fitted on the vast majority of homes across Manchester, and for good reason. They are tough, affordable and low maintenance. But they are not bulletproof. Handles snap, locking mechanisms seize up, and hinges wear down over the years. When that happens, you need someone who knows uPVC doors inside out.
We have been repairing uPVC doors across Greater Manchester for over a decade. Most problems can be diagnosed and fixed in a single visit because we carry a comprehensive stock of parts in our van. There is no call-out fee, and if we cannot fix it, you do not pay.
What We Repair on uPVC Doors
The most common uPVC door problem we see in Manchester is a failed multipoint locking mechanism. This is the metal strip that runs up the edge of the door and connects the handle to the locking points at the top, bottom and centre. When it fails, the handle either goes floppy, locks in position, or the door refuses to latch properly. We replace the gearbox or the entire mechanism strip depending on the fault, and we carry the most common sizes for Mila, Yale, GU, Fuhr and Lockmaster systems.
Hinges are another frequent call-out. A uPVC door is heavy, typically between 30 and 45 kilograms, and that weight bears down on just two or three flag hinges. Over time, the top hinge takes the brunt of the load and starts to sag. You will notice the door dragging along the threshold, or the lock becoming harder to engage because the door has dropped out of alignment. We replace the worn hinges and re-align the door so it sits square in the frame again.
We also deal with snapped handles, broken euro cylinders, cracked panels, faulty letterboxes and cat flaps, and draughty seals. If your uPVC door is letting cold air in, we can replace the rubber gaskets that run around the frame to restore the seal. It is a small job that makes a big difference to your heating bills during a Manchester winter.
One thing we always check on a uPVC door repair is the cylinder security. Many older uPVC doors still have basic euro cylinders that can be snapped in seconds with a pair of pliers. If yours is vulnerable, we will let you know and can upgrade it to an anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-bump cylinder during the same visit. It is a quick upgrade that seriously improves your home security.
Common uPVC Door Problems
These are the issues we fix most often on uPVC doors across Manchester.
Door handle is floppy or will not spring back
A floppy handle nearly always means the gearbox inside the multipoint lock has failed. The spring cassette breaks down after years of use and the handle no longer returns to the horizontal position. We replace the gearbox or the full mechanism strip, depending on which approach is more cost-effective for your particular door. It is usually a 30 to 45 minute job and we carry the most popular gearbox types in our van.
Door has dropped and catches on the frame
This is caused by hinge wear, particularly on the top hinge. The door gradually sags under its own weight and starts scraping the threshold or rubbing against the lock side of the frame. If the hinges are adjustable, we can sometimes bring the door back into alignment with adjustments alone. More often, the hinge barrels are worn out and need replacing. We fit heavy-duty flag hinges rated for the weight of your door and realign everything so the lock engages smoothly.
Lock will not engage or key will not turn
Several things can cause this. The euro cylinder might be worn, the multipoint mechanism could be jammed, or the door may have moved out of alignment so the locking hooks or rollers no longer line up with the keeps in the frame. We diagnose the root cause before quoting. If it is a cylinder issue, it is a straightforward swap. If the mechanism is seized, we replace the faulty component. And if it is an alignment problem, we adjust the hinges and keeps to bring everything back into line.
Draughts coming through around the door edges
The rubber gasket seals around a uPVC door frame perish over time, especially on south-facing doors that get a lot of sun. They shrink, crack and lose their flexibility, letting cold air and rain water through the gaps. We strip out the old gaskets and press in new ones that match the original profile. It is a relatively inexpensive fix, but it makes a noticeable difference to comfort and energy efficiency.
Cracked or damaged door panel
uPVC door panels can crack from impact or deteriorate with prolonged UV exposure. We remove the beading, take out the damaged panel and fit a replacement that matches the colour and style of your door. This is far cheaper than replacing the entire door. We can source panels in white, cream, grey, black and woodgrain finishes to match virtually any uPVC door on the market.
