How to Fix a Door That Will Not Lock
A door that will not lock is almost always caused by one of four things: a failed multipoint mechanism, a dropped hinge, a misaligned keep, or a worn euro cylinder. Each of these is fixable, usually within an hour, and the repair costs far less than you might think.
This is one of the most common calls we get. The handle lifts but nothing locks. Or the key turns but the deadbolt does not throw. Or the door used to lock fine but now you have to lift, push and wrestle it to get the key to turn. Whatever version of the problem you have, the cause is mechanical and the fix is straightforward once you know what has gone wrong.

The Four Most Common Causes
1. Failed multipoint locking mechanism
This is the cause of around 60% of the "door will not lock" calls we get. The multipoint mechanism is the metal strip that runs up the edge of your door. Inside it is a gearbox that connects the handle to the locking hooks, rollers and shootbolts around the frame. After years of daily use, thousands of lifts of the handle, the gearbox teeth strip and the handle loses its connection to the locking points.
The symptom: You lift the handle and feel little or no resistance. The locking points do not engage in the frame. The door closes but does not lock.
The fix: We replace the gearbox or the entire mechanism strip, depending on whether a standalone gearbox is available for your particular mechanism. We carry the most common types on the van. A mechanism replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes and costs £120 to £200 including parts.
2. Dropped door (hinge wear)
Doors are heavy. A standard uPVC door weighs 30 to 45 kilograms, and a composite door can be even heavier. All that weight hangs on two or three flag hinges, and the top hinge takes the brunt. Over time, the hinge barrels wear and the door starts to sag on the lock side. Even a drop of a few millimetres is enough to throw the locking points out of alignment with the keeps in the frame.
The symptom: You have to lift the door by the handle to get the lock to engage. The door may also be scraping the threshold or rubbing against the frame.
The fix: We replace the worn hinges with heavy-duty replacements and re-align the door so it sits square in the frame. This brings the locking points back into line with the keeps. Hinge replacement takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
3. Misaligned keeps
The keeps are the metal plates screwed into the frame that the locking hooks and rollers engage with. If the door or frame has shifted slightly, the hooks might be missing the keeps by a few millimetres. They extend, but they do not catch.
The symptom: The handle lifts and you can see the locking points moving, but they do not fully engage in the frame. The lock feels like it is almost working but not quite.
The fix: We reposition the keeps in the frame so the locking points engage fully. Sometimes this means loosening the keep screws and shifting the keep plate, sometimes it means fitting a new keep in a slightly different position. This is usually a quick fix, done in 20 to 30 minutes.
4. Worn euro cylinder
The euro cylinder is the part the key goes into. If the internal pins are worn or the cam that connects to the mechanism is damaged, the key might turn without actually engaging the deadbolt.
The symptom: The key turns but feels loose or spins without locking the door. Or the key goes in but will not turn at all.
The fix: A new euro cylinder. This is a 15-minute job. We always recommend upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder while we are at it, as standard cylinders are a major security weak point. A lock replacement costs £69 to £120.
What You Can Try Before Calling Us
There are a couple of things worth trying before you pick up the phone. They will not fix a failed mechanism or worn hinges, but they might sort out a minor issue.
Lubricate the lock. Spray a small amount of graphite lubricant or WD-40 into the keyhole and onto the locking points. Sometimes a stiff lock just needs some lubrication. Do not use oil, as it attracts dirt and makes the problem worse over time.
Check the keeps. Open the door, lift the handle, and watch where the locking hooks and rollers go. Then close the door and try again. If the hooks are not lining up with the keeps, you can sometimes see the mismatch. Tightening or loosening the keep screws slightly might bring things back into alignment.
Lift the door slightly. If the door has dropped, try lifting it by the handle while turning the key. If this gets the lock to engage, the problem is almost certainly hinge-related and you will need new hinges fitted.
If none of these quick checks solve the problem, the issue is internal and you need someone with the right parts and tools. That is where we come in. We offer same-day lock repairs across Manchester with no call-out fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why will my door not lock even though the key turns?
If the key turns but the door does not lock, the most likely cause is a failed multipoint locking mechanism. The gearbox inside the mechanism has stripped, so the key and handle no longer drive the locking hooks and rollers into the frame. The mechanism needs replacing. This is the most common door locking fault we see in Manchester.
Can I fix a door that will not lock myself?
Some minor issues, like a stiff key or a slightly misaligned keep, can be addressed with lubrication or adjusting the keep screws. But if the multipoint mechanism has failed, the gearbox is stripped, or the door has dropped significantly, you need a professional with the right parts. Attempting to force the lock or adjust the mechanism without the right tools usually makes the problem worse.
How much does it cost to fix a door that will not lock?
It depends on the cause. A simple keep realignment or hinge adjustment costs from £69. A euro cylinder replacement is £69 to £120. A full multipoint mechanism replacement is £120 to £200 including parts and labour. We diagnose the fault before quoting, so you know exactly what you are paying for.
Is it safe to leave my door if it will not lock?
No. A door that will not lock is a serious security risk. Even if the latch holds the door closed, the locking points are not engaged and the door can be opened far more easily than it should be. Get it fixed as soon as possible. We offer same-day repairs for locking faults across Manchester.
