Can a uPVC Door Be Repaired?

Yes, nearly every uPVC door problem can be repaired. Nine times out of ten, the fault is with a mechanical component inside the door, not the door itself. Replacing the failed part costs a fraction of what a new door would set you back, and in most cases we can do it in under an hour.

We hear this question every single day. Someone's front door will not lock, the handle has gone floppy, or there is a cold draught whistling through the seals. They assume the whole door needs replacing. Almost always, it does not. A uPVC door is essentially a sturdy frame with a set of moving parts inside it. When those moving parts wear out, you replace them, not the whole door. It is like changing the brake pads on a car rather than buying a new one.

What Parts of a uPVC Door Can Be Repaired?

Pretty much everything that moves, locks, or seals. Here is a breakdown of the most common uPVC door repairs we carry out in Manchester.

Multipoint locking mechanisms. This is the metal strip that runs up the edge of the door and controls all the locking points. When the internal gearbox wears out, the handle goes floppy and the door stops locking. We replace the mechanism or just the gearbox, depending on the fault. This is the single most common uPVC door repair we do.

Euro cylinder locks. The cylinder is the part your key goes into. They wear out, they can be attacked, and sometimes the internal pins just stop engaging properly. Swapping a cylinder takes about 15 minutes and is one of the cheapest repairs going.

Handles. uPVC door handles take a beating. The spring cassette inside them breaks, and the handle stops springing back to the horizontal position. We fit a replacement handle that matches your existing spindle size and backplate.

Hinges. uPVC doors are heavy, and the flag hinges that hold them up wear over time. The door drops, scrapes the threshold, and the lock stops lining up with the frame keeps. New hinges and a realignment sort this out.

Seals and gaskets. The rubber seals around the frame perish with age. When they shrink and crack, cold air and rain water get through. Replacing the gaskets is a quick, inexpensive job that makes a noticeable difference.

Panels. Cracked or damaged panels can be replaced individually without touching the rest of the door. We match the colour and style to your existing door.

Repair vs. Replace: The Numbers

Here is the reality. A brand new uPVC front door, supplied and fitted, costs between £600 and £1,200 in Manchester. Sometimes more if you want a specific colour or style. Now compare that to the cost of the most common repairs.

Typical Repair Costs

  • Handle replacement: £69 - £89
  • Euro cylinder change: £69 - £120
  • Mechanism replacement: £120 - £200
  • Hinge replacement: £80 - £120
  • Seal/gasket replacement: £60 - £90

New Door Costs

  • Basic white uPVC door: £600 - £800
  • Coloured uPVC door: £800 - £1,000
  • Composite door: £900 - £1,500
  • Plus fitting: £150 - £300
  • Plus disposal of old door: £30 - £50

The maths is clear. Even the most expensive repair costs less than the cheapest new door. And the repair takes an hour, not a full day.

When Should You Actually Replace a uPVC Door?

We are repair specialists, but we are also honest. There are situations where a new door genuinely is the better option. Here is when we would tell you to consider replacing rather than repairing.

The frame is twisted or warped. If the uPVC frame has moved significantly, repairs to the mechanism and hinges will only go so far. A twisted frame needs replacing.

The welds have cracked. uPVC frames are welded at the corners. If those welds have cracked or separated, the structural integrity of the door is compromised. This is rare, but it does happen on older doors.

The door is severely discoloured or brittle. Very old uPVC can become yellowed, chalky and brittle after decades of UV exposure. If the material itself is failing, a new door is the better investment.

You want a different style. If you are upgrading from a plain white uPVC door to a composite or a coloured panel design, that is a replacement job. But if you just want your existing door to work properly again, a repair is almost certainly all you need.

If you are not sure which camp your door falls into, give us a ring. We will come out, have a look, and give you an honest answer. There is no call-out fee, so you have nothing to lose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth repairing a uPVC door or should I replace it?

In most cases, repairing is the better option. A new uPVC door costs between £600 and £1,200 fitted, while most repairs cost under £200. Unless the frame is twisted, the welds have cracked, or the panel is severely warped, a repair will restore your door to full working order at a fraction of the replacement cost.

How long does a uPVC door repair take?

Most uPVC door repairs take between 30 minutes and an hour. A simple handle swap takes about 15 minutes. A full multipoint mechanism replacement takes 45 to 90 minutes. We carry the most common parts in our van, so the majority of repairs are completed in a single visit.

Can you repair a cracked uPVC door panel?

Yes. We remove the beading, take out the damaged panel, and fit a replacement that matches the colour and style of your door. Panels are available in white, cream, grey, black and various woodgrain finishes. It is far cheaper than replacing the entire door.

My uPVC door will not lock. Can it be fixed?

Almost always, yes. A door that will not lock usually has a failed multipoint mechanism, a worn euro cylinder, or misaligned locking points. All of these are repairable. We diagnose the fault on site and fix it there and then. Labour starts from £69 with no call-out fee.
